Orange or Streaky Salon Tan? How Custom Airbrush Fixes Uneven Color
By Ohana Sun Tanning | July 18, 2026
North Phoenix note: We’re in the Deer Valley area near Union Hills Drive and 32nd Street, right on the northern edge of the Paradise Valley Village.

A lot of people first find us for a tan, then stick around because they notice other feel-good changes too, like having more energy after being consistent with our red light therapy. If you’re here because your salon tan turned orange or came out streaky, yes, Custom Airbrush can absolutely help when it’s done correctly. We match the solution tone to your skin and apply it in controlled, layered passes so your color develops even and natural. The honest limit: it’s not a great plan if you’re going to sweat hard or jump in a pool right after.
Orange and streaky tans usually come down to 3 fixable things
Orange tone and patchy development are frustrating because they don’t just look “off.” They can cling to hands, ankles, knees, and any dry spot you didn’t even know you had. Most of the time, it’s a mix of (1) undertone mismatch, (2) application that’s too heavy in one area and too light in another, and (3) prep and timing that didn’t support an even fade-in.
Phoenix makes that third one a big deal. Heat and a quick errand run can turn into sweating during development, especially in summer. That’s where we’ll guide you on timing. If you can, book outside the peak daytime heat so your color has a calm window to set and develop evenly.
Quick reality check: If your last tan went sideways, it doesn’t mean spray tans “don’t work” on you. It usually means you weren’t matched correctly, or your skin wasn’t set up for an even develop.
What our Custom Airbrush does differently at our bronzing bar in North Phoenix
Custom Airbrush is where technique matters. Gail doesn’t just “spray and hope.” We start with a quick consultation so we’re choosing a shade depth and undertone that makes sense for your skin. That’s the biggest reason orange tones happen. A solution that’s too warm on fair skin, or not balanced for olive undertones, can read brassy fast.
Then it’s the way we apply it. Uneven tans usually show up where your body moves and where skin is drier. Our airbrush passes are controlled and feathered, and we build gradually instead of dumping product in one spot. People notice the difference. We hear “even application” and “flawless finish” a lot, and first-timers regularly tell us the whole thing felt smooth and easy because Gail talks you through what’s happening.
“Gail definitely knows what she’s doing, every time I got a spray tan in the past I was glowing orange. But Gail knew what formula to use and definitely how to apply it. She explained everything and made me feel very comfortable. I’ll be back again”

Prep and aftercare are not “extra, ” they’re the difference
We’ll be direct about prep because it protects your result. Shower, shave, and exfoliate before you come in. Skip oil-based scrubs, skip bar soap, and come in with no lotion, makeup, perfume, or deodorant. After, plan on loose dark clothing and flip-flops, and remove your jewelry before you spray. Then let your tan develop without sweating or heavy activity. Minimum 10 to 12 hours, and next day is even better. You’ll also rinse your hands about 2 to 3 hours after, then moisturize to keep the fade even.
Event timing in Phoenix: when to schedule your Custom Airbrush
If you’re tanning for photos, a wedding, a formal, or a weekend trip, timing is everything. In our desert climate, sweating during development is one of the fastest ways to get streaks. For a lot of people in Phoenix, a morning or evening appointment is the sweet spot, especially in summer.
A simple planning rule we use
- Big event: Give yourself time for the tan to develop and for your first shower, without rushing.
- Outdoor plans: Avoid scheduling right before heat exposure that’ll make you sweat.
- Travel and commuting: Our Deer Valley location near Union Hills and 32nd Street is an easy stop if you’re heading toward Scottsdale or central Phoenix.
We serve clients across Phoenix, Scottsdale, Glendale, Peoria, Paradise Valley, and Cave Creek, so we’re used to helping you plan around work, events, and weekend getaways.
Is Custom Airbrush right for you, or should you skip it this week?
Custom Airbrush tends to be a great fit if you want a natural-looking tan, you’ve gone orange before, you’re brand new and want someone to walk you through it, or you need to look even for photos. People tell us Gail is “meticulous” and that they felt comfortable through the whole process, and that’s exactly the point. This isn’t a rushed booth tan.
But if you know you’re going to swim, hit a hard workout, or do anything that has you sweating heavily right after your appointment, it’s better to schedule for a different day. We’d rather you get the kind of color you’re proud of, not a tan that breaks up because life got in the way.
Why people trust Gail with their color (and keep coming back)
Ohana Sun Tanning has been part of Phoenix for 17 years, and we’ve stayed busy for a simple reason. We pay attention. People come in nervous about how they’ll look, especially if they’ve had a bad orange tan before, and they leave feeling confident.
“New to the area. Found Ohana Tanning for a spray tan and I am well pleased! Gail was very meticulous with my custom spray. She even followed up with a text message to ensure that color developed to my liking.”
